The Rays and Yankees were at it again yesterday as you might have seen. This time however, things got a little more intense. You might have heard that this past Sunday in a spring training game between the Rays and Yankees, there was a tough play at the plate, in which the Rays baserunner was aggressive in knocking over the catcher.
Sure it is just spring training, but thats exactly it at the same time. Between teh two division rivals, they have mutliple games remaining in the Grapefruit League and in the AL East this coming season.
As much as I love Shelley Duncan (Yankees 1b/of), the respect I have from him takes a drop after this “unintentional” slide. Duncan is Cardinals pitching coach, Dave Duncan’s, son as well as Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan’s brother.
Of course however, this site features mostly fantasy baseball articles, so I’m here to offer some fantasy perspective on the situation.
For one, this incident gets Shelley’s name out there, who will most likely be on the major league roster come opening day, however will not get a starting spot. He might be a decent late round AL only pick because of his potential power if he were to get an everyday spot in the lineup, however, lay off him in most drafts, but keep an eye on him throughout the season.
As far as the rivalry, or at least the one that is brewing, it could have some impact this coming season, but that won’t be determined until their first regular season game. The one potential impact it could have (if it carries over from the spring) is that pitchers will be attacking hitters and not getting their full 5-6 inning start, and rather get ejected in the first few innings due to an intentionally hit batter. Batters could also be effected if supsensions were handed out, so be cautious, but do not put too much emphasis on it.
This kind of thing isn’t something to worry about too much, but dont let it slip your mind. Don’t fall into some of the hype some people are bringing it, saying to be extra cautious starting these players when the two teams meet.
-Also worth noting is Mike Mussina pitched 5 perfect innings today against the Pirates. .
