Chien-Ming Wang came out the winner in an old-fashioned duel against C.C. Sabathia, who at least pitched another strong outing off his terrible start to the season. Wang went seven innings against the Indians, and gave up only four hits and two walks, while striking out nine. Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera finished the last two innings for Wang, and each pitched a couple of two-strikeout perfect ones; the 1-0 shutout win for the Yankees provided Mariano his seventh save of the season. On the other side of the scoreboard, C.C. pitched eight innings, also giving up only four hits, and only delivering one walk while striking out eight. One of those four hits was a solo home run in the fifth from Melky Cabrera, his fifth homer of the season, and enough to keep the Yankees in the lead for the rest of the game.

The great starts brought Wang’s record to 5-0 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, and Sabathia’s to 1-4 with a 7.87 ERA and 1.78 WHIP (he’s got a stinker of an early season small sample to work down from).
