Carlos Delgado whacked two solo home runs in the Mets’ 6-3 win over Atlanta yesterday. Delgado had been batting .186 going into the game, and was given a night off for his troubles on Friday (he was used as a pinch hitter in the game, and struck out at the plate). The two home runs yesterday cemented a two-for-two, three run, two RBI performance for Delgado, who also drew two walks. Delgado’s hitting was only one part of a very rough start for Atlanta’s John Smoltz–he went four innings to give up seven hits, four runs, and two walks, while striking out five.
Nelson Figueroa started for the Mets, and he gave up all of the Braves’ runs and seven of their hits before leaving in the sixth inning to hand the game to the bullpen. The Mets bullpen promptly pitched a two-hit, one strikeout shutout through the final innings of the game, with Billy Wagner closing it out for his sixth save of the season. He still has a 0.00 ERA for the year.

Delgado also crushed a ball on Saturday that got knocked down by the wind and was caught on the track. Hopefully, this is a sign he’s not done yet…
