Randy Johnson returned to the major leagues yesterday, though maybe not to full form?He managed to pitch through five innings before hitting a ninety pitch count (Arizona is keeping him on some tight restrictions after his second back surgery, though manger Bob Melvin claims he doesn’t have a pitch count for the Big Unit), and struck out seven in that time while walking four. San Francisco scored three runs while he was on the mound, but an error from third baseman Mark Reynolds kept the runs from Johnson’s ERA. Diamondbacks reliever Chad Qualls gave up two runs in the seventh to hand the Giants a 5-4 win, but an error from shortstop Stephen Drew meant they were both unearned. In case you were wondering, that’s a five-run win the Giants managed without “earning” a single run. Johnson will have to wait to try again for his 285th career win until his likely start against the Padres later this week.
Center fielder Aaron Rowand went two-for-three with two doubles and an RBI for the Giants; he’s hitting .303 for the season.
