Morning Roundup: Tiger Style

For the second time in as many games, the Tigers feasted on Twins relief pitching. After Minnesota starter Scott Baker took a 4-3 lead through the seventh inning, Jesse Crain entered in the eighth and promptly gave up three runs: first Magglio Ordóñez doubled to drive in Placido Polanco (who reached base on a walk), and then Miguel Cabrera lifted a two-run home run to give Detroit the lead. Cabrera’s shot was one of five home runs hit in the game, four of which came from the Tigers (Ordóñez, Gary Sheffield, and Carlos Guillen each hit solo home runs). Tigers fans (and fantasy owners) are hoping these past two days are a signal of Detroit’s resurgence after their anemic start: Sheffield, Cabrera, and Polanco have been batting .216, .213, and .149, respectively, thus far this season.

The usual combination of Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau drove in most of Minnesota’s runs, with Mauer going two-for-four with two RBI (he’s batting .264) and with Morneau (.224) hitting once in four tries, a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
