A.J. Burnett and the Blue Jays three-hit and shut out the Red Sox last night on the way to a 3-0 victory.
Burnett brought his record against Boston to 4-0, and pitched two outs into the eighth inning, giving up three hits and five walks while striking out five. His season record improves to 3-2 with a 4.82 ERA and 1.61 WHIP, along with 24 strikeouts. Jesse Carlson and B.J. Ryan finished out the game for Burnett, giving up no hits and a walk between them, and with Ryan striking out two and earning his third save of the season.
Álex Ríos, who is leading the team with a .320 batting average at the top of the order, went three-for-five in the game with a solo home run (his third shot of the season) and a stolen base (his seventh). David Ortiz and Mike Lowell were the only Boston batters who could connect for a hit, Ortiz going two-for-four and Lowell going one-for-four with a double.
