Morning Roundup: Dicey Control

Daisuke Matsuzaka walked eight in his five-inning start yesterday, but managed to give up only one run and earn the win in Boston’s 6-3 win over Detroit.

The eight walks are the most Matsuzaka has ever given up, and they tied the major league high for the season. Despite all the table-setting, though, the Tigers couldn’t feast, stranding eleven runners in the game, and it wasn’t until the fourth inning that they got on the board with an RBI single from Curtis Granderson. That single was one of the two hits Matsuzaka gave up in the game; he struck out one.

Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman, who, on the other hand, you might expect to have control issues, went six innings to walk two and give up seven hits and four runs, striking out four. The second hit he gave up was a two-run home run to Mike Lowell, who returned from the DL a week before, and who went three-for-five in last night’s game with two RBI and two runs.
