Toronto starter Dustin McGowan came out the winner in a strikeout showdown yesterday with Javier Vázquez and the Chicago White Sox.

McGowan went 7.1 innings to give up only four hits and no walks, and to strike out six, while Vázquez went 7.2 to give up eight hits, one run, and one walk while striking out nine. That one run–a solo shot from DH Matt Stairs–was enough to make the difference, however, as the White Sox batters couldn’t get past third base in the game.

McGowan improves to 2-2 with a 2.95 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, and so far is posting some very good peripherals: 7.17 K/9, 3.59 BB/9, 0.42 HR/9, on a .306 BABIP (Vázquz, by comparison? 3-3 with a 3.30 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, and 8.94 K/9, 2.14 BB/9, 0.39 HR/9, with a scary .337 BABIP).

The game capped a low-scoring series for the White Sox as they were swept by the Blue Jays; the teams’ combined run totals over four games were Chicago 5, Toronto 12.
