Morning Roundup: Four-Hit Hamels

Cole Hamels shut out the Braves yesterday in a four-hit, complete game performance in a 5-0 win for the Phillies.

Hamels struck out six and walked two, and improved to 5-3 on the season with a 2.89 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Though he is still pitching well with a 7.44 K/9 and 2.62 BB/9, each are down (and up) from last year’s numbers (respectively), and he may be riding a bit heavy on a .253 BABIP this year. Hamels is giving up more line drives this year, at a 23.2% clip, up from 19.4% and 17.7% in the two seasons previous. If that rate continues and his luck starts to regress from its good run, we could see Hamels put up some bad starts.

Meanwhile, the Phillies hit three home runs in yesterday’s game, a solo shot each from Pedro Feliz (his sixth of the year) and Ryan Howard (his ninth), and a two-run home run from Shane Victorino (his first).
