Geovany Soto earned his ninth home run yesterday on a round trip inside the park, and the Cubs beat the Astros 7-2.
Soto was one-for-five in the game, going hitless after the three-run home run in the fourth inning, bringing his season average to .317 and his RBI total to 33. He’s gone eight-for-twenty-four in the last week.
Ted Lilly was the starter for the Cubs, and he pitched well enough through 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to the Astros, while striking out six and walking two. He goes to 5-4 on the season, with a 5.14 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, and four wins and thirty-one strikeouts in his last four starts. Jon Lieber, Michael Wurtz, Carlos Marmol, and Bob Howry closed out the game for him.
Michael Bourn went two-for-four in the game, knocking in one of Houston’s two runs, and stealing his nineteenth base of the season. He’s hitting .200 for the season, with a .267 OBP at leadoff.

On April 8th, 2008, on this very blog… a very wise, learned man who I respect a lot and listen to a lot had this to say about Mr. Soto.
“Geovany Soto will flop.”
And, to this I say: he wouldn’t even flop when his veteran teammates were trying to haze him last night by signaling him to flop slide into home when he didn’t need to.
The season isn’t over, granted… but he is not only NOT flopping… but he is the best offensive catcher in the game through nearly a third of the season.
Props to G-Soto!

They can’t all be golden….but the season is still young! I am taking the voodoo doll out of storage as we speak.
