Joe Mauer went two-for-four yesterday with a two-RBI single that put the Twins ahead in a comeback 7-6 win over the Tigers.
Mauer also hit a double in the game, and brought his season average to a team-leading .333. Though he has yet to hit a home run, and his RBI total is stuck at 14, Mauer is approaching the plate well enough to be posting a .396 OPB.
The Tigers pounced early on Twins starter Boof Bonser, scoring all six of their runs in the first inning off a home run from Curtis Granderson, a series of RBI singles from Magglio Ordóñez, Carlos Guillén, and Édgar Rentería, on a wild pitch from Bonser, and on a throwing error from Mauer. The Minnesota pitching settled down after that, giving up four hits and a walk through the rest of the game, and the offense chipped away bit by bit until taking the lead in the seventh.
Joe Nathan closed out the game for the Twins, recording his eleventh save of the year, while Detroit starter Kenny Rogers let reliever Zach Miner take the loss for the five earned runs between them; Rogers’ ERA is now 6.27, Miner’s, 8.83.
