Ervin Santana pitched a complete game shutout yesterday to lead the Angels to a 4-0 win over the Royals.
Santana, who is looking more and more like he’s going to have the very good season he has the skills for, improved to 6-0 by striking out nine Kansas City batters and giving up only four hits. The shutout, Santana’s second of his career, brought his line to an incredible (and, to be fair, likely unsustainable) 2.02 ERA and 0.88 WHIP.
Lost in the shutout shuffle may be the fact that Royals starter Brett Tomko had a shutout of his own going through seven innings, in which he struck out seven and gave up only two hits and two walks. Santana outlasted him in the duel, however, and the Angels jumped on the Royals relievers in the ninth. First, Erick Aybar tripled; then, Casy Kotchman drove Aybar home with an RBI single; finally, back-to-back home runs from Garret Anderson (bringing Kotchman home) and Brandon Wood broke Kansas City’s back.
Santana’s outing is getting some much-deserved attention all around–for a very good take on his (and Joe Saunders’) prospects for the year, read this morning’s take at FanGraphs.
