Alexei Ramirez went three-for-four yesterday (and three-for-four the day before) and hit a home run in a win for the White Sox over the Royals.
Ramirez, who we took a look at the other day in our Rookie Roundup, hit a double and the home run yesterday, bringing his season totals to seven and three, respectively, in those feats; he also hit an RBI single in the eighth. The performance brought his batting average to .275, and his slugging percentage to .431. Lest we all forget, Ramirez was our General Patrick DiCaprio’s pick to be AL Rookie of the Year; feel free to add your thoughts on this choice in the comments.
Ramirez’s home run was the fourth Chicago players hit in the game, all of them off Kansas City starter Zack Greinke. Greinke started the season in dominant form, but over the past month has seen his ERA balloon from 1.80 (on May 7) to 3.56 (today). Greinke is posting a strikeout rate of 6.22 K/9, which is down from last season’s 7.82 and the 7.11 of the year before, though his walk rate is the lowest its been in that span, 2.33/9 this year compared to 2.66 and 4.26 in the two years previous. He’s currently pitching into a .286 BABIP, which, combined with the slight lowering of his K/9, should account for the 4.12 xFIP the Hardball Times gives him. All in all, Greinke looks to be in the middle of a regression, which should be likely to slow down as his numbers return to expectations.
