Fantasy Baseball Warfare is a great matter to a nation; it is the ground of death and of life; it is the way of survival and of destruction, and must be examined.–Sun Tzu

Now that another month has passed, it’s time to review the performances of this year’s most promising rookies, updating our list from last time with the players who have been called up since May 1st. Once again, we’ll be making sure to examine the Generals’ preseason favorites (found here and here) to aid any bragging or razzing rights.

Player AB AVG OBP SLG R HR RBI SB
Kosuke Fukudome 201 .303 .405 .433 36 3 21 4
Jacoby Ellsbury 176 .290 .389 .420 41 4 20 27
Geovany Soto 186 .296 .388 .554 22 9 38 0
Joey Votto 170 .288 .363 .524 28 10 29 3
Evan Longoria 166 .241 .314 .434 22 7 28 3
Carlos Gomez 213 .282 .314 .408 31 4 23 17
Daric Barton 174 .213 .337 .316 26 2 17 0
Alexei Ramirez 98 .255 .275 .378 11 2 9 2
Jay Bruce 22 .591 .690 1.000 10 2 6 2

Once again, Kusuke Fukudome looks like the leader of the pack, with the best batting average and on-base percentage, while holding his own in run and RBI totals. His slugging pales in comparison to Geovany Soto’s and Joey Votto’s, however, as those two battle for the rookie home run title, with Evan Longoria only a few behind himself. Jacoby Ellsbury is playing great all around, keeping pace with Fukudome in RBI and scoring more runs than any other rookie (in fact, he’s the fifth-highest run scorer in the AL thus far), and stealing far more bases than the rest. Any of these five still look like viable contenders for the Rookie of the Year award.

Though he’s hit some rough patches and doesn’t shine quite so much as the top five, Carlos Gomez is still holding his own in the major leagues, and is performing a sight better than Daric Barton or Alexei Ramirez. Jay Bruce joined the major leagues last week, and we’ll see in a month if he catches up to his teammate Votto or the rest of the rookie leaders.

Anyone you think I missed? Tomorrow we’ll look at the pitchers again!
