This week the Roundtable discusses whether to go for a top five catcher.
Head on over to Greener on the Other Side for this week’s responses.
It looks like there is general (forgive the pun) agreement to eschew a top five catcher. But it is not unanimous, with a well reasoned dissent.

FACT: Rotoauthority (Tim Dierkes) was the only person to mention Chris Snyder as a sleeper catcher. And he probably only did it because I’ve been on his case to give the guy some love. How the HELL is this guy getting overlooked. Look at what he did in the second half last year, what he has done this spring, what his manager is saying about possibly batting him 4th. Look at stats, look at some tape over at MLB.com. Look at whatever you need. But the fact that none of you would have mentioned him when he is a much better sleeper than the guys you did mention is beyond me. Love your site, but this one bothers me.

I guess you don’t listen to our radio show in February; on the first episode we discussed sleeper catchers and we mentioned both Snyder and Montero, saying that together they could be a 30 HR tandem and be a top ten catcher as a pair, and that both were worthy fantasy pickups. So I have to disagree with your belief.

But I continue to see 95% of sleeper lists for catchers without Snyder’s name listed. Perhaps its because of the reasoning you just employed. He isn’t in a platoon with Montero in the same way he was last year. Not anymore. Snyder will catch ~115-120 games. Melvin claims his bat is just too good not to be in the lineup everyday. He is thinking about batting him 4th or 5th. Montero is a non-factor this year and Snyder is a good bet to go .270/18.

“How the HELL is this guy getting overlooked.”
.238 AVG in 4 Major League seasons… 79% contact rate last year (78% in 2006) with a .252 avg probably means he’ll hit somewhere between .240 and .255. Yippee.
Doubling his power output from each of the previous two seasons is attractive, but he’ll have to do that again for me to get excited.
His OBP is mildly attractive, so in leagues with OBP, he is a bit more valuable. Ah, if only OBP were standard 5×5!

I like Snyder a lot this year as well. Definitely someone who could slip thru the cracks and provide top production in a very weak position. He is the type of guy that people should take a risk on.
