Buy Francisco Liriano now?

One might be tempted to buy Liriano now, thinking you might get a steal while he continues to make minor league starts. Heck, I had even been strongly considering it myself. However, as noted in Aaron Gleeman’s Daily Dose column over at Rotoworld, Liriano has been throwing his slider less, instead relying on his developing changeup.

So what’s the big deal? Well one of the most amazing skills he possessed, besides his great strikeout ability and excellent control, is he did all this while inducing 55% of balls in play on the ground in 2006. Although obviously a very small sample size, his GB% has dropped all the way down to 31% over 2 starts in 9 minor league innings, which is quite concerning. With the possibility of a dramatically reduced GB%, the injury risk and probable limit on his innings, I’m not so sure anymore that it’s worth it to buy low on Liriano unless it’s real low, like trading Joe Saunders for him.
