Fantasy Baseball Generals

Fantasy Baseball Warfare is a great matter to a nation; it is the ground of death and of life; it is the way of survival and of destruction, and must be examined.–Sun Tzu

Another week another razor thin result, and it doesn’t get any easier as we take on the best team so far in this coming week.

This week it was yet another razor thin margin. The Generals were getting hammered early in the week, starting out 1-8-1.  We made a furious charge to nose into the lead as of the end of the day on Saturday, only to lose a category on Sunday. So now we are at 19-19-2.

One could be pessimistic about the start so far, but the schedule has been brutal. In the first five weeks we are facing the top three (by voting consensus and excluding The Generals) teams. Despite this we are at .500 and are only 5 points out of first, so just surviving April as the league starts to regress to the mean as players’ stats start to even out is all one could hope for.

Offensively, the Generals hammered Fantasy Baseball Mafia, winning 4 out of 5 categories all by big margins.  We were winning batting average through Saturday only to yield on Sunday.  We still ended up with a .308 average and lost.

On pitching it was a heartbreaker. We had the second best ERA in the league and the third best WHIP in the league this week, with 5 saves to boot. And lost them all.  We lost by one win and 6 Ks. We lost ERA 2.38 to 2.66, and the FBM had a WHIP below one for 55 innings so our 1.12 WHIP lost.  It happens, sometimes you run into a buzzsaw.

While the less astute might view the season to date with rose colored glasses, one must divorce a fast start from reality. My team’s ERA and WHIP among my relievers are all very solid, and all are under three with the exception of Meredith and Saito. Last week they all got hammered and this week they all pitched great. Had we faced any other team this week we would probably be 22-16 rather than 19-19, and would be in second place.

So, overall I think things have gone very well and after a very slow start when all of the relievers had ERA’s over 5.00 except Rivera and Joba, things are evening out.
