Gary Matthews Jr. hit two solo home runs in the Angels’ 6-4 win over Boston yesterday. The two shots brought Matthews’ season HR total to four, and his RBI tally to 15; he’s batting .247 and has a stolen base, all in a season where most projections give him something around a 15 HR, 60 RBI, 10 SB season. The Angels’ six runs were knocked in by five batters, with the other RBI coming from Maicer Izturis, Erick Aybar, Torii Hunter, and Casey Kotchman (who hit a solo home run of his own to bring his season line to 6 HR with 14 RBI). The winning pitcher for the Angels was Jon Garland. He went six innings to give up eight hits, four runs, and two walks to the Red Sox.

Jon Lester was the starter for the Red Sox, pitching on three days’ rest after Josh Beckett (sore neck and flulike symptoms) and Dasuke Matsuzaka (flulike symptoms) were scratched the previous two days. Lester pitched five innings, giving up nine hits, four runs, and two walks, while striking out one. His season record is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.77 WHIP.
