Cole Hamels came out the winner in Philadelphia’s 7-4 victory over San Diego yesterday, denying once more Greg Maddux’s bid for 350 career wins.

Maddux pitched an out into the seventh inning, giving up eight hits, three runs, and a walk along the way, striking out two, while Hamels gave up five hits, two runs, and two walks over seven-and-an-out innings, striking out six for his 27th career win. Hamels is now 3-3 for the season with 36 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He chased Maddux off the mound in the seventh inning yesterday when he hit a single off the Mad Dog to advance Carlos Ruíz, who later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jayson Werth (Werth is on a hot streak lately, batting .289 with a .375 OBP for the season, picking up 15 R, 5 HR, and 13 RBI with 2 SB along the way).

Padres center fielder Scott Hairston went three-for-four with two home runs, one a solo shot in the fifth, and the other a two-run homer in the ninth that wasn’t quite enough to save the game for San Diego. His other hit was a double.
