Rays starter James Shields pitched his first career shutout in Tampa Bay’s 3-0 win over Boston yesterday. Shields two-hit the Red Sox in his third win of the season, and only gave up one walk while striking out seven. The outing brought his ERA to 2.54 and WHIP to 1.15, and completed a three-game sweep for the Rays. Meanwhile, rookie third baseman Evan Longoria went one-for-three in the game, with the one being a solo home run in the seventh (Tampa Bay’s two other runs were scored by Jason Bartlett, who came home on a throwing error and on a deep double by Carl Crawford). The home run completed a monster week for Longoria, who posted a .435 OBP with 4 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, and 2 SB.
Josh Beckett was the starter for the Red Sox, and he pitched an extremely good game himself–just not good enough to beat a shutout. Beckett went seven innings to give up two runs (one unearned), four hits, and one walk, while striking out thirteen.

Those three have combined for a 9-4, 2.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP start to the season, with 94 combined strikeouts–sounds like a good ride so far to me!
