An RBI single from Kevin Youkilis in the bottom of the ninth ended a game of fantastic shutout pitching from both Toronto and Boston last night.
Youkilis, who is batting .316 with a .400 OBP, brought his RBI total to 15 with a walk-off single that scored David Ortiz. The hit came off of Toronto starter Roy Halladay, who made it all the way through two outs in the ninth, giving up only five hits and a walk while striking out six. The loss brought Halladay’s record to 2-4. For the Red Sox, starter Jon Lester pitched just as great a game, going eight innings to give up one hit and four walks while striking out six. Jonathan Papelbon finished the ninth for him and got the win. The game brings Lester’s ERA to 4.31 and WHIP to 1.54; Papelbon’s, 2.25 and 0.83.
Lest, heh, you be too hasty in adding Lester to your team following this sparkling start, it might be worth your time to read Mike’s take on his skills from before the season started.
