Matt Garza held the Yankees scoreless in his seven-inning start, and the Rays went on to win 7-1 in last night’s game.
Garza gave up five hits to the Yankees, who couldn’t get a runner past second base against Tampa Bay’s starter, and he struck out three while walking one on the way to his second win of the season. He’s 2-1 now with a 3.86 ERA and 1.38 WHIP, and is apparently having extreme troubles with his strikeout rate. Garza posted 6.84 and 7.27 K/9 rates his last two seasons in the majors; this year he’s throwing 3.86/9. That’s the same rate at which he’s giving up walks.
Catcher Dioner Navarro went three-for-three with two RBI singles in the game, bringing his batting average to a team-leading .362, and raising his RBI total to 12.
