Kerry Wood blew his third save of the season yesterday in Chicago’s 4-3 loss to Milwaukee.

When Wood entered the game in the ninth, the Cubs were up 3-1. Then Wood hit Craig Counsell with a pitch, gave up a double to Gabe Kapler, an RBI single to Jason Kendall, and a walk to Rickie Weeks, before getting his first out, a strikeout to Mike Cameron. The next batter was Ryan Braun, though, and he hit a two-RBI double to score Kendall and Kapler to put the Brewers ahead. Braun had knocked in Milwaukee’s other run in the game with a solo shot in the sixth off starter Carlos Zambrano. Braun’s now hitting .287 with 4 HR and 21 RBI. Eric Gagne then closed the game for the Brewers to earn his ninth save of the season.

Both Zambrano and Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo finished with a no-decision in the game, and despite the low score, neither quite dominated the opposing team. Zambrano went 6.1 innings to give up a run on seven hits and two walks, striking out three, and Gallardo went six to give up nine hits, a walk, and three runs, striking out four. Gallardo has yet to record a win or a loss in his three starts this season, though he is pitching well enough for a 1.80 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.

If Wood ever had to earn a spot for this organization it would be the first.

When will they finally give the closing role to their best relief pitcher, Marmol?

Marmol’s more valuable where he is.

And Wood’s been a well above-average pitcher when healthy throughout his career. If you’re not sure what he’s done for the franchise, go look up his stats the last six weeks of 2003 including the playoffs.
