Randy Johnson threw ninety-seven pitches in his start against the Phillies yesterday, and afterwards said his back felt better than it has all season. It felt good enough to give him and the Diamondbacks a win, but his outing wasn’t without its missteps.

The Big Unit retired the first five Philadelphia batters he faced, then walked one and hit the next with a pitch, and in the third the Phillies got on the board with a two-hit, two-run inning. Johnson ended up pitching six innings to give up six hits and four runs, while walking two and striking out six. He retired Chase Utley and Pat Burrell in all six of the Phillies’ three and four hitters’ combined at-bats, and brought his season line to 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. His K/9 is 9.45 so far, and his BB/9 3.71. He’s suffering a bit from a .328 BABIP in his outings, so if he is able to remain healthy, he should be good for some high-strikeout quality starts, right in line with the moderate expectations you drafted him with, right?

Stephen Drew was the unlikely batting hero for the Diamondbacks, going two-for-four with a three-run home run in his first game at second in the batting order (he’s there while second baseman Orlando Hudson is out injured), and completing a three-game streak of multiple-hit games.
